John first handled a croquet mallet at age nine but other than a few games while at Cambridge University he did not get round to joining a club until 2004.

In 2006 he played in most of the UK golf croquet tournaments (winning the Musk Cup) and also played overseas, finishing 5th in the Cairo Open. In 2007 after intense effort over the winter to improve the consistency of his play, he became even more erratic but finished on a high as captain of the club team that won the Inter Club shield.

He is confident that a new mallet will be the solution to the consistency problem in 2008. If not, he'll be leaving it behind in Cape Town.
